In a nutshell... Tenten is a cheerful student who aspires to be a basketball star. Gifted with an amazing aim, this aspiration seems like a possible thing. She is the type to be friends with just about everyone. She also plays drums in band.
Personality: Tenten is a friendly, open girl who can get along with almost anyone. She's optimistic and tends to see everything in a positive light, though she can be assertive when need be. Growing up closely to her male cousins, she grew somewhat into a tomboy and is slightly sensitive about assumed gender roles and sexism in general, figuring girls could do anything boys did just as well.
Personal History: Tenten's had a relatively normal life, though her parents are slightly workaholic and could've been at home more than they have. When Tenten's parents weren't home, she'd be hanging out with her father's extended family. She grew very close to her fraternal cousins who were all boys and developed into a sort of tomboy. Sports of all sorts, especially basketball, were a popular hobby among this crew, but as Tenten grew older and her game got increasingly better--better than most of her boy cousins, to their chagrin--her interest in basketball became a serious goal. She came to Oshima, only to find they didn't have a girls basketball program, but she was determined to play. She'd find a way around it, somehow...
Tenten's cheerful and friendly personality easily earned her friends. She still hung out a lot with her cousins, but her girl friends from school managed to somewhat keep her rough-and-tumble tendencies in check, namely when it came to boys. This combined with her parents' fairy tail of a romance--her Chinese mother was a low-class woman her middle-class Japanese father fell head-over-heals in love with, and they ran off together to live a happy life--had her dreaming since she was a young girl of finding her perfect man. She wouldn't admit it up front to you, though. She's subtle about it, and she won't throw herself at her prospective love interest like certain girls.
Anyway, basketball. Tenten rocks at it with her crazy awesome aim, and she aspires to be a professional one day. In general, she enjoys playing most sports, preferring to get down and dirty rather than sit on the sidelines. She also plays drums in Oshima's music program. Some of her cousins were going through a musical expressionist phase and started a band, and they recruited her to play drums. She wasn't quite the natural at drumming as she was playing basketball, but she's getting better and enjoying it just the same.
